"The Hemoclysm"
Came across an interesting short essay by a guy called Matthew White, entitled "30 Worst Atrocities Of The 20th Century". The author puts across the interesting contention that the horrific events of the twentieth will possibly be seen as one continuous event, which he dubs 'The Hemoclysm'. rather than perhaps us thinking of it in stages; first world war, second world war, etc.
Another interesting point that he makes is at the end where he discusses proportionality and what ideology has been the most destructive during this period. You'll be surprised by the conclusion he comes to.
Anyway it's worth taking a look, it's one of the most interesting things i've read in a little while.

christ that was a relief. i've just spent an hour or so perusing the braindead claims and counter claims on the Guardian talkboard (talkbored? heh heh), and to read that piece is a real breath of fresh air. I loved his bit on how no counntries with mcdonald have ever gone to war ;)
also, theres something so nice about complicated ideas presented in simple language; it shows (a) respect for the reader and (b) a lack of pomposity on behalf of the author. example:
"Which bring me (as promised in the title) to the concept of dyads. "Dyad" is just a fancy name for "a pair of things having some relationship".
i've read other documents that play up or refuse to describe every other bit of "dyad" style jargon. "discourse" and "text" are two bread and butter examples of that sort of abuse. to academics: an definition at the start does not cost lives.... too late for Jacques unfortunately.
